LLOYD CAMERON
Lloyd gained an Honours degree in English and a Diploma in Education from the University of New England. He has undertaken postgraduate study and he is a member of the Australian College of Education. He has taught in both state and private systems, at co-educational schools and single sex schools. He is experienced at teaching English, History and Drama at both Junior and Senior levels and he has marked the NSW Higher School Certificate for nine years. He was appointed to the position of Head Teacher English and he has given many lectures to students on HSC texts.

Since 1994 he has been New South Wales Debating and Public Speaking Co-ordinator. In this position he manages several state wide programs, open to government and non-government schools at secondary and primary levels. He has served as a Council Member of the English Teachers’ Association and has organised seminars to assist in the professional development of teachers. Over the past decade he has represented New South Wales in meetings of the National Council of the Plain English Foundation and in 2000 he was elected National Chairman of this body. As part of his responsibilities in this position he attended, as Australia’s representative, the International Final of the English Speaking Union in London in 2001.

Lloyd has contributed articles and reviews to the journals of the English Teachers Association and the History Teachers Association and he has written over thirty study guides on senior English and Drama texts. He has made several sets of videos intended as teaching aids. One, aimed at debating coaches, featured two world champion debaters and the comedian Judith Lucy. A second, devoted to drama skills such as characterisation and movement, received an award from the Victorian Education Department in 1996. A third, entitled ‘Speaking To Make A Difference’ was directed at primary school teachers wishing to improve the verbal competencies of their students. This video was distributed to every primary school in New South Wales.

Lloyd has compered concerts of massed school choirs at the Sydney Opera House and directed plays with students from Sydney Grammar School, Kambala and SCEGGS Darlinghurst. In recognition of his ability as a communicator the Sydney Theatre Company commissioned him to write their guides for students attending the plays in the 1993 Education series. This involved interviewing the directors and designers of the productions and writing a commentary appropriate to HSC students. In 1994 and 1995 as Education Adviser for News Limited publications he promoted performing arts activities in dance, music and drama and provided advice on English texts to junior and senior secondary students, parents and teachers.

In recognition of his skills in co-ordinating the Plain English Speaking Award, The Sydney Morning Herald asked him to co-ordinate the judging of another program they sponsor - the Young Writer of the Year Award. He has arranged state and national events at venues such as the Powerhouse Museum, Government House and the National Maritime Museum. He has also helped in the provision of material for the Optus Education Channel, as well as co-ordinating a number of programs in conjunction with the Centenary of Federation, the Anti-Discrimination Board and the Botanic Gardens Trust.

Lloyd has written texts with staff from the Universities of Sydney and New England and he is co-author of a booklet entitled ‘Taking the Initiative’, distributed to all schools in the state that enter debating competitions. He has also co-operated with the Multicultural Education Unit to increase student and community understanding of cultural diversity by implementing the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition for primary school students. This program was nominated for a NSW Premier’s Public Sector Award in the category of Social Justice and Workforce Diversity.
